Half a century after Fjällräven’s founder Åke Nordin developed the classic outdoor fabric G-1000, the durable material is still one of the most commonly used materials in our product arsenal. It has shown its versatility and strength time and again in tough conditions and it has the ability to protect its wearer from the wind, water, and UV rays.
But needs can change depending on the type of environment and situation and this is why we’ve developed some new versions of the classic G-1000 fabric, the latest being G-1000 Air.
"The idea was to develop a fabric suitable for warmer conditions. It’s been adapted for use in tropical climates, but it’s just as well suited to Sweden when the weather is warm. And it has a really soft, comfortable feel,” says Felix Lindström, Production Coordinator at Fjällräven and responsible for all fabric testing.
G-1000 Air has been developed for situations when it’s more important to transport away heat and moisture than it is to keep the cold and rain out. It’s a lighter and airier fabric with a looser weave that, in contrast to the original fabric, hasn’t been treated with Greenland Wax – making it highly breathable.
Fjällräven’s outdoor expert and product specialist Johan Skullman, who has been involved in the development and testing of the new fabric, agrees. He sees many benefits with G-1000 Air, largely stemming from its looser weave.
“It's loose weave makes it comfortable to wear even when it gets wet. With a denser weave, the cotton fibers tend to swell and tighten a little when they get wet. This makes the fabric stiffer, which can lead to chafing. A looser weave still feels soft and comfortable when it’s damp or even really wet.”
Testing has taken place in both tropical and sub-tropical conditions, as well as in the changeable weather of Scandinavian summer. When trekking in varying conditions, the material has proven to be incredibly quick drying. A fantastic advantage, according to Johan Skullman.
“When you’ve trekked through a rain storm or crossed a river, G-1000 Air dries as soon as the rain stops or you get to the other side, due to the fact that it’s so breathable. This occurs thanks to the combination of body heat and heat from the sun.”
He goes on to tell us about a canyon trek where the test team waded in waist-deep water. He remembers the vibe in the group when they noticed how fast their clothing dried once they were back on dry land. As a result he now chooses G-1000 Air when he wants to push it a bit – when he is moving fast and carrying a lot, working harder than usual on a trek.
“That’s when I’d rather get a little wet in a rain shower than pull on my rain gear. I want to have as much air circulating as possible.”
