Trousers Guide

Outdoors trousers have a tough assignment. They are supposed to protect you and prevent wear from nature’s rougher edges. They should keep you cool and comfortable when the temperature rises and keep you dry until you can put on your rain suit. When the temperature falls, they should be roomy enough to wear a base layer underneath. And, as if that wasn’t enough, they should also be comfortable – and preferably fit well, too.

At Fjällräven, we spend a lot of time developing trousers that fulfill all of the demands that we, and you, the wearer, place on them when out in nature. Several of our newer models have won awards at exhibitions and in product tests arranged by magazines. We are proud that our new trousers are appreciated, but it is also rewarding to see that our ideas survive the test of time. Several classic models, like Vidda, which was first introduced in 1999, continue to be favorites among mountain trekkers, year after year.

We have trousers for trekking and other outdoor activities, such as travelling, hunting, other activities in the forest and everyday wear.

19 things that are good to know before selecting a pair of outdoor pants

Your outdoor trousers are put to the test when you are in the mountains. On long days of trekking they have to keep you warm and dry if the weather suddenly changes, and protect you from scrapes and scratches when you are covering stony terrain or trekking through scrub. They have to dry fast if you happen to get wet and ventilate out moisture when you sweat.

In addition, they have to be comfortable and let you move freely in all sorts of ways; when climbing, squatting and kneeling.

These are the minimum demands our product developers have when they design trousers for trekking and outdoor life in unsettled conditions. In addition to these, our trousers are packed with well-thought-through features that make life out in the wilderness easier.

Here are some of the features you will often find in a pair of Fjällräven trousers:

Choosing trousers

Three steps to finding the right trousers

Of all of the outdoor clothes in the wardrobe, trekking trousers probably carry the most memories. Thinning knees and buttons worn to a shine are reminders of adventures on hiking trails, in the mountains and deep in the forest. Given how long you will be using your outdoor trousers, it can be worthwhile to take the time to think more carefully about the type of trousers you want to have.

Our selection contains around thirty different models. Here is a checklist with questions you can ask yourself to find the pair that is right for you:

1. What will you use your trousers for?

Our trousers are made for primarily four areas of use: trekking (Trekking), travel to warmer climates (Travel), hunting and bird watching (Forest) and everyday use (Everyday Outdoor). Take a moment to think about how you will be wearing your trousers the most and start browsing through the trousers in that category. You can also read more about these four categories under Fjällräven trousers.

2. How do you want your trousers to fit?

No two bodies are exactly the same and people have different opinions about how trousers should fit. This is just another reason why we work with such a large selection of trousers. Our outdoor trousers come in two styles, the slightly more relaxed Comfort fit and the more classic Regular fit, and three waists, High, Regular and Low. You can also choose to have Fixed leg endings with buttons/drawcords at the bottom or Raw length, which means that the length of the leg can be adjusted to exactly your preference.

3. Do you want to have any extra functions?

The details on a good pair of outdoor trousers are what make them the perfect companion. These can be pockets for maps or tools, zip-off legs that turn the trousers into a pair of shorts or stretch panels for extra mobility. Many of our trousers also have reinforcements at the knee and rear for extra durability where it is needed most. We hope that these questions will make it easier for you to choose a pair of trousers. If you cannot find what you are looking for, please send us a message @ weborders@fjallraven.us, and tell us what kind of trousers you need.

Fjällräven Trouser Types

We develop trousers for many different activities and contexts. The common denominator in all of them is that they offer protection from wind, rain and hard wear while at the same time fitting comfortably and offering a durability so strong they will accompany you during your nature experiences for many years to come.

To make it easier for you to choose, we have divided our selection into four main categories based on their intended use:

Trekking and outdoor trousers (Trekking)

Here you will find our most hardwearing trousers. The majority of them are made from wind and water resistant G-1000, which just might be the outdoor world’s most adaptable and durable fabric. This tightly woven fabric is impregnated with Greenland Wax and you can apply more wax to increase your trousers’ durability and resistance to wind and rain. We also have several models that are made from comfortable stretch, and hybrid trousers where we have combined G-1000 with stretch panels for an optimal balance between durability and mobility.

Our Trekking series also contains shell trousers made from our wind and waterproof Eco-Shell and Hydratic fabrics. These multi-layer fabrics with a membrane release moisture from the body, which means you run a smaller risk of becoming drenched with sweat when you are on the move, but they also offer 100 per cent protection from the wind, rain and snow.

Travel trousers (Travel)

Our travel trousers combine high durability and low weight and are perfect for adventures in warmer latitudes or even warm summer days at home. Most of the models are made from MicroTravel (MT), which provides excellent ventilation and feels cool against the skin while still offering protection from the sun’s burning rays. Add to this that MT is practically wrinkle-free, dries quickly and takes up little space in your suitcase and it becomes clear that trousers made from MT are the perfect choice for travelling. You can also find travel trousers in our durable but lightweight G-1000 Lite.

Hunting trousers (Forest)

Hunting, fishing, bird watching and other activities in the forest place special demands on your equipment, and our trousers for these activities are made from a quiet, “swish-free” fabric and are packed with practical details. Most of the models are made from durable G-1000 Silent , but a few are made from wind and waterproof Hydratic . Here you will find trousers that are made for a higher activity level, with more ventilation and stretch panels for extra mobility, but that are still lined for comfort when sitting still in cold temperatures.

Everyday trousers (Everyday Outdoor)

Why compromise on durability and functionality in your everyday clothing? Well, we certainly do not want to, so we have developed a series called Everyday Outdoor – well-tailored, high-quality trousers that can be worn anywhere, at any time. These trousers often have fewer pockets than our pure outdoor models, but in the same spirit are made from practical, durable fabrics such as G-1000 or MicroTravel.
